ScotJam: Explorers - Hill and Rock Skills Week
ScotJam: Explorers - Hill and Rock Skills Week
Over the course of the week, you will work towards gaining two Mountain Training awards. This week is ideal for anyone who wants to explore the hills and crags that surround Scout Adventures Lochgoilhead.
Rock Skills
Connect with others and learn to move on rock
A Rock Skills Introduction course is all about having a go and experiencing rock climbing for the first time. It can feel very unfamiliar, even for people who have climbed indoors, so our course providers (the people who deliver the courses) are experts at supporting people to move at their own pace. There will also be plenty of opportunities to get to know the other people on the course as you share new experiences at the crag.
Immerse yourself in the activity
Rock climbing is an activity that requires your full attention which is one of the reasons people love it so much. The focus can provide a welcome break from life’s other distractions and a Rock Skills Introduction is a great way to immerse yourself in the sights, sounds and smells of climbing on rock.
Learn essential skills
There are several essential skills involved in rock climbing safely and they will be the focus of every Rock Skills Introduction course. The harness, the rope, the belay device and karabiner allow climbers to keep themselves and others safe when used correctly which is why it’s so important to learn how the system works and how to check each other before leaving the ground.

Hill Skills
Connect with others and the great outdoors
Our courses are small sociable spaces run in beautifully hilly places. It’s common for people to have shared interests and the start of the course always involves a discussion about motivations and previous experience. After that, the course will cover an agreed list of topics, tailored to meet the needs of the group and the weather conditions
Build confidence to explore
Venturing off a signposted path or away from familiar routes can feel a bit daunting, which is why we’re here to help you explore with confidence. All our Hill Skills providers (the people who deliver our skills training courses) are experienced hill walkers with a passion for people – they’re here to help you make the most of your local hills or have the confidence to hike on your holidays.
Learn essential skills
A Hill Skills course will focus on the essentials such as choosing where to go, knowing how to use a map and compass to navigate when you get there, and thinking about how to look after yourself throughout the day. A Hill Skills course can also be used as a stepping stone to our Lowland Leader qualification.
