ScotJam: Explorers - Walking Expedition

Whether you’re working towards your Chief Scout’s Award or completing your Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, this programme is designed to help you build the skills, confidence and experience needed for expedition success.

With support from experienced instructors, you’ll learn everything you need to prepare for and take part in a multi-day expedition - from route planning and packing your bag, to campcraft, navigation and cooking outdoors.

Throughout the week, you’ll develop the knowledge and judgement needed to travel safely and confidently in the outdoors, while learning how to look after yourself and your team on expedition.

This programme is ideal for Explorers looking to gain practical expedition experience in a supportive environment, while working towards their next award.

What you’ll experience

Expedition Skills
Learn the key skills needed to plan, undertake and complete a successful expedition.

  • Planning routes and preparing for a journey
  • Packing kit and equipment effectively
  • Navigation and decision-making on the hill
  • Campcraft and living comfortably outdoors
  • Nutrition and cooking on expedition

Multi-Day Journeying
Put your skills into practice through a series of journeying experiences, including overnight camps and supported expedition travel.

  • Walking with purpose across varied terrain
  • Setting up, living in and breaking camp
  • Managing yourself and your team over multiple days
  • Reflecting on progress and building independence

By the end of the week, you’ll have developed the confidence and practical experience needed to support your future expedition goals.

Programme Outline

This is a guide and may change depending on weather, route conditions and group needs.

Day 1 - Team Building
Meet your team, get to know your instructors, and set your goals for the week.

Day 2 - Expedition Skills & Training Walk
Focus on planning, kit preparation and packing before setting off on a local journey and overnight camp.

Day 3 - Return Journey & Preparation
Walk back to centre while developing your navigation and expedition skills, then prepare for the main journey ahead.

Day 4 - Rest Day
A more relaxed day delivered by the ScotJam Team.

Day 5 - Expedition Journey 1
Complete final checks before setting off on your route and putting your skills into practice on expedition.

Day 6 - Expedition Journey 2
Continue your journey, manage camp life, and build confidence through real expedition experience.

Day 7 - Expedition Journey 3
Complete the final stage of your expedition and return to site for your last evening at centre.

Day 8 - Celebrate & Wrap Up
Finish the week by celebrating your achievements.
