ScotJam: Explorers - Sail & Power

Spend a week on the water building confidence, learning new skills, and taking control of your own craft.

The Sail & Power programme focuses on working towards two internationally recognised awards:

These qualifications give you the skills and confidence to safely handle both sailing dinghies and powered boats, setting you up for future adventures on the water.

Throughout the week, you’ll be supported by experienced instructors as you develop practical skills, decision-making, and independence — all while spending your days out on the loch.

What you’ll experience

Powerboating (RYA Level 2)
Learn how to safely control and handle a powered boat, including:

  • Boat handling and control
  • Coming alongside and manoeuvring in tight spaces
  • Man overboard recovery
  • Picking up a mooring buoy
  • Understanding rules of the water

Sailing (RYA Stage 2)
Develop your sailing skills and confidence, including:

  • Points of sail, tacking and gybing
  • Boat control and handling
  • Basic knots and ropework
  • Launching and returning to shore
  • Basic collision avoidance

By the end of the week, you’ll be more confident on the water and capable of handling both sail and power craft.

Programme Outline

Day 1 - Team Building
Meet your team, get to know your instructors, and set your goals for the week.

Day 2 - Powerboating Basics
Learn about your boat, safety procedures, and take to the water to begin developing your driving skills.

Day 3 - Powerboat Skills
Focus on manoeuvres, drills and boat handling to build confidence and control.

Day 4 - Rest Day
A more relaxed day delivered by the ScotJam Team.

Day 5 - Sailing Introduction
Learn to rig your boat, develop core skills, and head out onto the water.

Day 6 - Sailing Skills
Build your confidence with tacking, gybing and sailing techniques through activities and challenges.

Day 7 - Skills Consolidation
Refine both your sailing and powerboating skills, focusing on areas you want to improve.

Day 8 - Celebrate & Wrap Up
Finish the week by celebrating your achievements.
